ABOUT CAROLINE FIELD

Since 2016 Caroline Field has been Curator of the Australian Catholic University Art Collection. In this role she is building upon her extensive knowledge of Australian art and her experience in the collection, management and public presentation of art.

Caroline was Manager, Australian Galleries, Melbourne, from 2006 to 2011. During this period she curated many exhibitions, including 10 Contemporary Australian Artists: A glass act, in 2010, with glass collector Sandy Benjamin OAM. This highly successful exhibition featured work by Clare Belfrage, Cobi Cockburn, Mel Douglas, Tim Edwards, Wendy Fairclough, Brian Hirst, Jessica Loughlin, Kirstie Rea, Tom Rowney and Richard Whiteley.

Caroline then began writing the history of Australian Galleries and was awarded an Honorary Creative Fellow at the State Library of Victoria from 2012 to 2016. She also undertook a Writer’s Residency in 2012 and 2014 at the Bundanon Trust, NSW. Australian Galleries: The Purves Family Business, The First Four Decades 1956 –1999 was published in 2019.

Her previously held positions include Director of the City of Horsham Regional Art Gallery; Curator of the Deakin University Art Collection; Founding Manager/Curator of Deakin University’s Stonington Stables Museum of Art, Toorak campus, and the ICON Museum of Art (now Deakin University Gallery), Burwood campus.

Caroline has a Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Printmaking), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; a Master of Arts (Fine Arts), University of Melbourne; a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies, Deakin University, Melbourne.

Caroline was awarded a Sarah and William Holmes Scholarship at the Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, London, in 1995. In 1999 she was offered an Internship at the Word & Image Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Caroline is a contributor to the Australian Dictionary of Biography and a valuer for the Australian Government Cultural Gifts Program. She is currently curating an exhibition of works by Tom Rowney to be exhibited at Canberra Glassworks in February 2022.
